When you want to deploy your app to an actual device you need to be a registered developer. It’s very easy but there are stories of very long waiting times – we were lucky I guess but I also know developers who got it in only a few weeks. You pay your $99 and then have a bit of paperwork to do.

You sign a contract between yourselves and Apple. You have to fill in banking details and tax forms, all straight forward although the tax forms require professional advice, especially the Japanese one which has the world’s smallest font and a rather too literal translation. We did have to run everything past our accountants and I would strongly recommend people take on accountants that are familiar with royalty deals especially those originating from overseas.

Everything is done online and some paper copies have to be sent, for the Japanese tax form you even need a certificate of residency to show your company is based in the UK. As you may have gathered, we’re based in the UK, but much of this does apply to other countries.

Ok we got a bit diverted by paperwork there. Now you’re ready to make your first app, so what are you going to make?

Looking at the charts, already there is an alarming array of games and apps of every genre and every quality level and price point.

The stories in the various forums suggest pots of gold, and yes, it’s true for the few that succeed. Take iShoot – the guy developed a quite basic game and put it out last year. It didn’t sell. He reworked it, released it again $2 cheaper and again it didn’t sell. So he released a free version and it shot (no pun intended) to the top of the free charts pulling the paid for version with it – right to the top of the paid for all apps chart more or less worldwide.

The story is he made $250k in one week of sales [and a lot more besides - Ed]. He’s still top 5 now. The game is a basic clone of the classic Team17 game Worms (so where are you guys with Worms on iPhone anyway?). Its graphics are very basic, the gameplay is very simple but it works and people seem to love it.

Fieldrunners is another great example of iPhone success. The guys first released the game with only one level, no sound and limited number of enemies and game modes. It did extremely well and has since being launched last summer sat in the top 50 apps. After a while they released a free update that included more enemies, another background, music and sound thus taking advantage of revenue from the game to develop and enhance it.

This is possibly the first time developers have been able to take that approach. Koi Pond developer’s the Blimp Pilots have done the same thing, releasing a basic app and using the money from sales to fund updates that add to the functionality and quality and address customer comments.

Also worth noting are gimmick apps – Sound Grenade and iPity being very recent examples. These apps are very, very simple. Ipity is a flash style face of TV hero Mr.T and a number of samples ripped straight from the videos, his mouth moving in a Terry Gillian fashion. It sells at the lowest price point but shot to the top 5 within days of release and I estimate will have made the creator in excess of f100k.

Sound Grenade was made in a lunch time. It has a picture of a grenade and a really annoying sound sample. It was released for free and shot to the top of the free charts – according to the developer he added in game adverts when it went top 50 and is making $200 an hour on click throughs. He has now released an enhanced version with more sounds and selling it at the lowest price point but again it’s shot into the charts.
